Sea Fever evokes the exhilaration and grandeur of a voyage on the high seas, drawing its mood and imagery from the famous poem of the same name by John Masefield.
This work was commissioned by the Australian String Teachers Association and was premiered by massed string orchestra at the 2019 Melbourne String Orchestra Festival.
The opening melody is introduced by the first violins with a quiet tremolo accompaniment, evoking the stillness of a mist at dawn. This image is soon dispelled by a spirited passage that whisks us away on our voyage, developing into a series of rollicking fiddle tunes shared between instruments. The first theme later returns in more dramatic form, building in intensity until reaching its exciting conclusion.
Although written as a stand-alone piece for advanced players, beginner to intermediate players can join in with the specially adapted parts that will fully involve them in the performance, making it a valuable work for School Concerts and Festivals.
